Club History

The Westminster Riding Club was founded in 1934 by a group of local Carroll Countians who shared common interests socializing and horseback riding. Competition among local riding circles was prevalent during those early years. As membership grew, so did the club's recognition. Before long, competition spread from local to national equestrian riding circles throughout the Eastern United States. Ribbons collected from those various events are proudly displayed in the clubhouse today.

In the early 50's, there was a transformation from horse to seahorses. A 25 yard swimming pool was built for the members' pleasure and was shortly followed by a separate diving facility. In 1999, the original pool was updated and lengthened to 25 meters and a separate baby/kiddie pool was built.

The Westminster Riding Club still retains its original name and memories of its historical significance to the community and founding members. Many changes have taken place over the years. More recently, with its steady growth of membership, the club has become an active center of entertainment, while providing an opportunity for privacy and relaxation for members and their guests.

Today, as a member, you become part of the Riding Club's heritage and family, enjoying activities throughout the year for everyone in every season.

Summer activities explode with the grand opening of the pool on Memorial Day weekend; the pool remains open until Labor Day, and is open seven days a week from 12:00 noon until 9:00 p.m. The general pool (25 meters) is divided into two sections -- one for small children, and the other for older children and adults. A separate baby/kiddie pool is available for infants and toddlers. For those who are more adventurous, a diving pool is equipped with a diving board and water slide.

There are many planned activities, such as picnics and pool parties throughout the summer. Swimming lessons are offered to children ages 4 and up. The Seahorses competitive swim team is open to children and young adults. Tennis and volleyball are very popular and are highlighted by tournaments throughout the summer. Swimming activities are supervised by the pool manager and lifeguards.

For those who enjoy eating while basking in the sun, the "Seahorse Cafe" is open, serving salads, sandwiches, candy, ice cream, and soft drinks. Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day picnics are highlights of the summer season.

As Fall and cooler weather set in, activities move indoors. The clubhouse becomes the center of activity, with facilities including the downstairs clubroom, horseshoe bar, pool table, pin-pong table and TV. As a member, you have complete use of the clubroom, kitchen, and cold storage facilities for private affairs, such as birthday parties, family gatherings, or quiet evenings with friends. Special rates are available for members who wish to rent the upstairs club hall for larger gatherings, such as wedding receptions, family reunions, and anniversaries, with seating for 250 guests.

The Annual Holiday Dinner Dance is one of the biggest highlights of the year. The clubhouse reflects the warmth of the season with Christmas garlands and poinsettias as members reminisce about years past.
